Osteoporosis Risk Appraisal

Learn more about this bone-thinning disease that causes serious fractures of the hip, spin, and wrist.  Complete the following questionnaire to determine your risk for developing osteoporosis.

2. Are you Caucasian or Asian?
3. Are you over 45?
4. Are you a female?
5. Are you postmenopausal woman?
6. Have you had an early or surgically induced menopause?
7. Do you have a family history osteoporosis?
8. Have you or do you have an eating disorder?
9. Have you been taking high doses of thyroid medication or prolonged doses of cortisone-like drug for asthma, arthritis, or other diseases?
10. Do you have a low calcium intake?  Do you NOT take calcium supplement daily?
11. Do you smoke cigarettes?
12. Are you physically inactive?
13. Do you frequently drink alcohol and/or caffeinated beverages?

The more times you answer "yes", the greater your risk for developing osteoporosis. If your score is 3 or greater, you should have a bone density test.
